Strengthen biogenic carbon reporting for Waste-to-Energy in Asia

INDUSTRIAL EMISSIONS

17 Apr 2025

As part of ENVEA, APAQ Group is excited to present the AMESA-B system, the world's only continuous emissions sampling system for biogenic carbon testing.

Waste-to-Energy a crucial role in diverting waste from landfills, reducing methane emissions, and providing a more sustainable waste management solution to mitigate climate change. As Waste-to-Energy is gaining traction in Asia to solve the mounting issues of landfill, you might have a question - is energy generated from waste incineration indeed 'green' or renewable? Well, that depends.

Part of waste-to-energy conversion can be considered renewable, due to the presence of organic and biogenic compounds in incinerated waste. The question is therefore how much of this is biogenic CO2, and therefore what is the real carbon footprint of the heat or electricity produced by waste incineration or RDF plants. In reality, this is hard to determine, due to the mixed nature of municipal solid waste, and lack of proper waste segregation policies and infrastructure in many Asian cities. Previously estimated with unreliable and labour-intensive sampling of waste collected and generic emission factors, this share can now be accurately measured thanks to AMESA-B, based on the principle of carbon-14 dating analysis on the sample cartridge deployed for up to a month.

We see it coming, for more accurate greenhouse gas accounting in cities and municipalities, reducing taxable emissions or trading between power generating companies, and planning carbon capture for waste incineration facilities to be net-zero or even carbon-negative. The question is not 'if' but 'when', and responsible governments and industries need to plan ahead.
