A Day of Sharing and Mutual-Learning in Kuching, Sarawak

AMBIENT ENVIRONMENT

8 May 2025

On 29 April, ENVEA – APAQ Group had the honour of delivering a one-day seminar on Air Quality Management in Kuching, Sarawak, at the kind invitation of our partner, Global Green Group. The seminar brought together officers from the Department of Environment (DOE) and Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), with the goal of exchanging knowledge and strengthening technical capacity in this rapidly evolving region.

The session covered a wide scope—from global and regional developments in air quality governance to monitoring and modelling technologies. We were encouraged by the active participation and thoughtful dialogue throughout the day, and grateful for the opportunity to contribute ideas and perspectives to Sarawak.

Framing Air Quality and Bridging Science and Policy: Monitoring and Modelling in Practice

Setting the stage for the discussions, Attilio Poli, Regional Director of Envea-APAQ provided an overview of the growth model and long-term strategy of Envea-APAQ to offer integrated approaches and build local partnerships. Envea-APAQ and Global Green Group together provided an overview of global trends and evolving standards in air quality including updated WHO Air Quality Guidelines, and a comparative look at Malaysia and Singapore’s policies and regulatory mechanisms, target-setting and monitoring in air quality management.

ENVEA–APAQ then introduced air dispersion modelling and forecasting as key tools to support urban planning, permitting, and emergency response, and demonstrated how high-precision monitoring networks can be designed to meet international standards, including those of the European Union and USEPA.

To complement the theory, participants were given hands-on experience with ENVEA’s latest generation of e-series gas and particulate analysers. These instruments feature user-friendly interfaces, energy-efficient performance, and eco-conscious designs, tailored for long-term deployment in both urban and industrial settings.

A Platform for Collaboration and Capacity Building

The seminar served as a platform for mutual learning and collaboration. Sarawak’s ambition to strengthen its own environmental governance, especially as it takes greater autonomy over environmental matters, presents a meaningful opportunity for regional partnerships.

At ENVEA–APAQ, we are committed to supporting our partners not just as a technology solution provider, but as a long-term collaborator in capacity building and policy innovation.

We extend our sincere thanks to DOE, NREB and Global Green Group for their hospitality and openness. We look forward to many more conversations, collaborations, and shared progress as we work toward cleaner air and a healthier environment in Sarawak.
